I just discover a fellow parishioner from my church who blogs too. But what I want to share is David’s conversion story. It is always very inspiring to hear how people turn from someone who does not know/believe in Jesus Christ to be a follower of Christ’s teachings. It is marvellous to see the changes unfolding in its own special and mysterious ways.
Many of us Catholic converts were previously the most disbelieving lot of people, very much like those of you who are probably not believing still. However, in its own way and own time, we are somehow drawn to the church and find our ways around.
I had to browse a bit before I found out who is David. I had seen him around and even attended the LSS in 2005 with him! David came from a background similar to mine, i.e. worship Guan Yin but we were drawn to the Christian faith after some searching.
David mentioned he read through the Bible before he went to church. He also said about going to church for the first time, on his own. I can see that he has chosen the ‘independent’ path, like me to find the Truth.
So what I want to share is - If you feel a prompting to know Jesus, take your time and initiative to find out about Him on your own. Get to know Him through a Bible and from inspirational books. Feel comfortable with who Jesus is before you ‘enrol’ yourself to the human side of things, i.e. a church. Sometimes, some churches ’style’ may not be your cup of tea. There are churches which are very vibrant and full of dancing and singing and there are churches like our Catholic church which is rather sombre and full of ‘head and shoulder, knees and toes’ rituals. Hahaha, what I mean is we follow a certain set of things like stand, kneel and sit.
Once you feel you like the Jesus that you find through His teachings in the Bible, then, you will find the courage to strike out to find a church to belong. Like David, I also went to church for the first time on my own. It is better we know the God we are to worship first before we know the people who worship Him. This is because religion has to be a first hand encounter with God and a personal experience with Jesus Christ.
Visit David Blindfolded and if you wish to find out about the Catholic faith in a non-intimidating way, you can join the RCIA.
