Tajuknya, IF YOU ARE IGNORANT OF THE BIBLE, STOP COMMENTING!
5:35 maupun demi bumi, karena bumi adalah tumpuan kaki-Nya, ataupun demi Yerusalem, karena Yerusalem adalah kota Raja Besar;
That some Western countries still adopt this practice is more of a quirk of history than a true Christian practice and I reiterate, swearing on the Bible is not an acceptable Christian practice. Thus, non-Christians who accept public office often take their oaths upon their preferred religious text or none depending on their choice. It is not unknown for elected Muslim politicians to use the Quran for this purpose in the West.
Sadly, there is much ignorance about Christianity and false perceptions have been passed down and along in Malaysia in a climate of religious chauvinism and fear.

God’s name is not to be called in vain. Hence, the Bible verse above which calls on the believer not to use God’s name to prove a point. There is no need to use God’s name to prove a point. Just answering yes or no will do. And God will judge you on your truthfulness or your lies.
I believe it is a tradition in the western world for witnesses in court rooms to place their hands on a bible (if they are Christians) for added “oomph” to their oath to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. It is definitely not a requirement from the Bible. So, Nik Aziz may have been influenced by the western dramas and movies. Surely, those who are not Christians would not be required to place their hands on a bible.
In Malaysia, the courtroom is empty of any holy book. Witnesses merely need to raise their right hand and give an oath to tell the truth.

Yes, we don’t swear by the bible. It’s just in hollywood movies, and their oath to tell the truth, especially in USA.
I think lately, more muslims are swearing by the quran, you hardly see if happening anywhere else, for catholics.
“I XXXX swear, I was poked in the bum…”

Of course Christians swear by the Bible even though they may admit to otherwise. Like many things in the Bible, Christians today “pick-and-choose” what they feel good about.

So no need to blame TG Nik Aziz for something that CHRISTIANS do all the time. This is just one example. In fact, I found an interesting article from a Christian polemicist who actually DEFENDED oath-taking:
http://www.tektonics.org/lp/oathswear.html
Anyway, why make a fuss about Christians not being ordered to make an oath on the Bible? I can find many injunctions in the Bible today that Christians do not follow, i.e., 1 Corinthians 11:2-16.

menj – Thanks for links but I only take references from my church priests so I won’t trouble myself with all the random sites. Corinthians is letter from St. Paul. I follow Jesus, not Paulie.

Regardless of what your church clergy tells you, apparently the evidence shows otherwise. As to whether you follow Jesus or Paul, the answer is pretty obvious that most of the New Testament was written by Paul or his followers.

I find it amazing that Menj who is obviously not a Christian, can say with conviction that Christian do swear on the bible. Well, I won’t comment of those “unreliable” youtube movies. But isn’t that the same as saying that muslim is a terorist? Because the Bali bombing, 9-11 and etc’s. Sorry for the crude example but isn’t it the same thing as Menj is doing.
Why the fuss as Menj asked? Well didn’t Menj read and understand what Lillian post is all about.
To clear the misconception of other about swearing in Christian. So that my little muslim niece won’t go and ask me one day, “Eh, auntie do you swear on the bible, cause my teacher says that?”
