When Jesus said the kingdom of God belongs to ‘one of these’, ie, the children, He truly means it. As a mom to small children, I have always marvelled at the things the children feel about Jesus. I like to note and jot down all these little encounters because they are precious.

I was sitting down with my little boy, on the kitchen floor, rummaging through our cabinet for foods. He was sitting on my lap and we spent several minutes chatting there, while looking through our supplies of biscuits, noodles, cereals and such. Praise the Lord our larder is always full.

So, after we were done, I lifted him up so that I can stand. He has grown to quite a healthy boy, weighing over 22 kgs. I exclaimed, “Wow, you are getting too heavy for mommy to carry you.” He played with me by bending his knees up so that I have no choice but to carry him, instead of his standing up.

I don’t know why I blurted out, “You know…some children do not have legs so their mommies have to carry them all the time.”

He told me, “That means they have to crawl around with their hands?”

I replied, “Yes. But sometimes, some children have weak hands or no hands, so they had to be cared. Of course, they always have their mommies to take care of them or other kind people.”

He gave a kind of deep thought look and you can see from his eyes, he imagines the hardship.

He said, “That means we must make fun for them.”

My eldest son who passed by heard the conversation and said, “Huh? Make fun of them?”

My little boy quickly corrected his sentence. “NO! We must give them a lots of fun!
English is not our main language but he realised his sentence sounded wrong somehow. So, he went on to tell me what we can do for children like those. It is very heartwarming and touching that I have a compassionate boy like him.

He gave me suggestions after suggestions on what we can give to the children. He thought of every minute details.

And finally, he said, next time when they died, Jesus will make them all healthy again. He said, “They will have their legs, their hands and they can run around.”

It is frightening how vivid he said it. Earlier, in the morning, my housekeeper who is not a Christian too assured herself that her deceased disabled daughter is now in a better place because I have often times comforted her that that’s the only way to cope with child loss. My son didn’t hear our conversation at that time. And yet, the same conversation cropped up. Indeed, from the mouth of babes….

At that time Jesus said, I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
