In America, they call the day before Ash Wednesday, Fat Tuesday. One doesn’t need to guess why it is call Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras (in French).
It is simply the day before fasting begins. We must get fat first, eh?
On Tuesday morning, I went to have breakfast alone. I knew it is going to be my ‘last day’ of eating whatever I fancy. So, I ordered a plate of char koay teow with extra prawns. Then, I ordered a plate of two pieces roti jala (some ‘net bread’) with curry chicken. As I savour my char koay teow and the huge prawns, I kept wondering if I have the will to last for fourty days.
I skipped lunch and had a medium rare, bloodied steak as I lamented to my kids, “Your ma is going to puasa for fourty days and fourty nights. So, this is my last supper.” *pretend to sob sob*
All my sons said in unison, “You sendiri cari pasal, who ask you to do that? Jesus never demanded you. Chey….why don’t you do it only on weekdays and eat on weekends?”
I told them I enjoy whinning about ‘I am not eating meat and seafoods, only eggs and milk and vege (and whatever meat stock that I don’t actually ‘bite into’)
The above is a plate of vegetarian ‘roasted pork’ which I bought from the market. It was my ‘fake meat meal’ last year. I had managed to go on vegetarian fast for the whole of Lent since three years ago.
It is not an easy feat but I am going to try. However, I promised my little boy that I will ‘buka puasa for a few hours’ (skip my vege only regime) on the dinner during his birthday. He wanted to go to some revolving restaurant and I am not going to waste good money eating only salads.
So, from now till April 17, 2009, it is vegetarian only. So help me God. I am not telling the world because I am a hypocrite who likes to boast (like Jesus described in the Bible). But I am sharing so that I don’t break my own vow. God will not kick my butt if I break it but my sons are going to laugh their arses off if I gave up midway. Geddit?
