I celebrate mass on a Thursday evening because my church has a special mass on every Thursday during the season of Advent. I knew it is going to be a long drawn mass as Fr Fab had warned us about ‘extended sermon’. His session was last week, which I missed as I had exam and this evening was another PP. Next week, it is going to be Fr. Simon Labrooy and I wouldn’t want to miss Fr. Simon’s session ‘cos Fr. Fab told me he is the coolest Catholic priest around.

Now, let’s talk about the homily for this evening. The theme is ‘Let the children come to me’ from the Gospel. The PP is an expert in scripture and it does get a little draggy after a while because teachers expert in scriptures tend to pump knowledge into their homilies and small brain people like me have difficulties concentrating for too long.

So, my mind started wandering after a while. I was blogging in my mind. I was thinking of making a blog topic call ‘Let’s play gawd’. Just imagine we have the authority like God. How will I do it? Will I let all the suffering children to live and never let them die? Will I not allow any war, any crime, anything that hurts people? Or will I be the God that rules this world, with all its imperfections, sufferings, ugliness and such?

Then, I asked myself, (while the homily was on going) what’s the point of living if all our lives are perfectly perfect with absolutely nothing but sheer joy all the time? Will that build our characters? Wouldn’t it get boring after a while? Or will we go around like zombie or high on weeds all day, singing praises, dancing, eating and other boring things like those? Seriously, come to think of it, what will Heavens be if all the people are just happy people, with absolutely no work to do, nothing to feel emo about or no feelings like jealousy, anger, PMS-ing and etc?

Bah! Who cares what Heavens feel like, no? What’s more important is our ability to muddle through this life on earth and do the best we can, whatever that is. Whatever awaits us, we shall just adapt when we get to it. Cross the bridge when we come to it. I am sure St. Peter will be there to hand out manuals for us. Commandment #1 “Thou can now covet thou’s neighbour’s wife ‘cos there is no right and wrong, cos in heavens, all are ok” Hehehe.

So, with the crazy title of ‘Let’s play gawd’ playing on my mind, suddenly I heard the PP said, “Let’s play God”. Let’s try to be more compassionate, understanding, slow to anger, forgiving to our children. And I went, “Oh oh….OhMyGod, is that coincidence or what?”

Return to the LORD your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love, (Joel 2:13)

Having heard that, I wonder how often can we find the grace the play God to our children? The PP reminds us that giving all those extravagant gifts for Christmas, birthdays and etc are not playing God. But bringing our children closer to Jesus, treating them the way God treat us, i.e. being forgiving, full of love, slow to anger, compassionate is what Jesus asked from us.

So, let’s play God, shall we?

(I use PP to protect the real identity of the person. I do not want someone else to twist my words and if the PP heard how I interpret his well-crafted homily, he will probably wring my neck. Kehkehkeh.)
