Jacknaim and another blog reader, Holly, both Muslims have asked me where the Holy Trinity is mentioned in the Bible. I am unable to give them any explanation because during the Holy Trinity mass which took place a few weeks ago, I didn’t get the ‘enlightenment’ because the sermon was rather theological in nature as the senior priest preached it in such a way that I cannot grasp due to my limited knowledge.
So, I thought of asking another priest to help me out because I really want to get this over and done with. I know what is the Holy Trinity but I know I won’t be able to explain them to my Muslim friends, ever.
I am lucky I have a copy of this other priest’s sermon and what he said is very truthful….
It’s Trinity Sunday and I think it is every preacher’s nightmare including mine, to preach on the Holy trinity. It’s a very difficult topic to handle.
An easier way to get out of this without doing a con job would be to categorise the whole aspect of the trinity as Mystery: a mystery that even Grissom and Horatio can’t handle.
There are lots of examples given to me but the name Horatio kept ringing in my head. I didn’t ask the priest to elaborate further. I kept wondering for days which Horatio is the priest talking about. Shakespeare? Some old scribes in Biblical time? Who?
I really wanted to write some kick-ass explanation on my blog but I couldn’t get past the introduction para. Then, one evening while I was in the car with my two sons, I asked them, “Hey, you know who is Horatio?” They couldn’t answer. Then, I asked again, “What about Grissom and Horatio?”
Both shouted so loud, it took me by suprise. “OH!!!! THAT HORATIO?”
For a moment, I thought I have missed out something from my religious class because my two sons know something that I don’t.
They mocked me, “MOM, you are so out of touch. Update yourself, ok? They are the two guys from CSI New York and CSI Miami. Like this you also don’t know?”
Well, sometimes, we failed to see the obvious because we complicate issues too much. I think it is very obvious that Catholic Christians all believe in God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. We know that and we do not need to complicate issue by trying too hard take them apart, put them together and try to take them apart again and attempt to explain the steps.
What I find enlightening is the description of the trinity by Father Fabian Dicom. He said we enter into the trinity in our daily lives if we live a life guided by the Christian faith, i.e. love one another.
The Oneness of God
Distinct experiences of God, yes. But the Three Persons are One God. Love binds Three Persons so that three become one. The triune God is the model of perfect love.
If you want an explanation of love in Christian term, please read my personal blog – Exactly what is love?.
And how do we enter into the trinity?
When we love as Jesus showed and commanded us to, when we are responsible parents, when we care, when we empathise with others who are sick, suffering, sad…etc .we enter into the trinity. When we promote equality, justice and stand up for the truth we enter into the trinity.
Therefore, to those who cannot grasp why we Christians are so sure of the Holy Trinity and yet, cannot give non-Christians a decent explanation, I am sorry that I have to say there is no way anyone can make you understand and believe. Some things are best left alone because even priests whom had dedicated their lives to learn still admit that it is very hard to explain. This post has taken me more than a week to write because I know that no matter how I try to simplify things, it can never be simplified with a verse or two from the Bible.
Religion is never meant to be explained with few words picked up from the holy books. Religion is suppose to give us a guide to live a life that makes the world a better place for others. That’s the whole purpose of religions. We have our guide from the holy books, we use our human minds to put them in action. Our guides may not always be the same but it is always for the betterment of our lives and those around us. I think anyone, whether belonging to a faith or not, have the same purpose in life. Well, except for some…..
