What do Christians think of ‘Oprah Winfrey church’?
by lilian ~ May 15th, 2008
I have the good luck or rather bad luck of being indexed by Google for Oprah Winfrey church. So, I am getting traffic from people looking for Christians thoughts on Oprah Winfrey church. I personally are not wise enough to give my views.
In the Youtube video Oprah quoted she was ‘disconnected’ from the Christian belief because she heard that ‘God is a jealous God’. I think it is very convenient for her to just take one verse out of the whole Bible to claim that she doesn’t want a jealous God. Then, she went on her talk show to insist that one can get to Heaven (her perceived one) by their own merits.
So…I know that it is no longer the kind of Christianity that I subscribe to. I was a little disturbed and I decided to ask some well-learnt person from my church if Oprah is a cult? I prefer to keep his identity private but trust me, this is one of the coolest replied I have from one of the top persons.
as for oprah’s “church”, as far as i know (my limited knowledge) the official church has not said anything about that. perhaps other evangelical churches through their pastors have their views about the issue.
personally i would not bother too much about it. my reason would be
that throughout history there have been persons, groups, cults… with
various beliefs and orientations, and many of them contrary to the
teachings of Jesus..directly rejecting HIM. this has been the “norm”
from the time HE came into the world. and yet His church goes on…
perhaps even purified and renewed???
freewill is an important ingredient of christian life…and if we
extend this understanding to the way we look at others…then I guess
people are free to propagate what they want,
BUT the receivers must be
mature enough to process what they hear, or they must be helped to
process it ( especially if they are young and impressionable)oprah has a very big following, perhaps she meets the needs of some
people who need to hear what she says…her own brand of
“spirituality”. well i don’t think there is anything spectacular about
her or her mentor.in conclusion, and in my opinion the church would never subscribe to
any cult and that would include oprah’s. and we would be cautioned
about them and warned not to be swayed by them......post continues after advertisement
I said it is the coolest reply because I didn’t get any mumbo-jumbo, yadda yadda yadda, bla bla bla about what we usually hear from those learnt people. Sometimes, I privately think that some of those who are responsible to guide us are misguided because they have lost touch with the real world. They still live in Rome in Caesar times while we are here, struggling on the ground level.
Therefore, I pray that we are guided like what Jesus told his disciples in Matthew Chapter 13.
10The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”
11He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 13This is why I speak to them in parables:
“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand. 14In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:
” ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a] 16But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

Despite many “alternative” views of God around (and Jesus), the church which God had established through Jesus (and that includes you and me) have survived and is still growing after 2000 years. Blessed are those indeed whom He has revealed Himself. I was once blind but now I see

pablopabla - LOL, now we are talking….I notice a big change in my blogging style and yours too. We have shift our ‘winds’, Praise God.
zewt - In my Catholic church, we do not emphasise too much on end times signs…We just carry on living the NOW. But I do read some of those books and do get excited over them, but not too overly eager because what matter is the NOW.
